Bright Tiles, Big Impact: Sunshine Mahj Raises $2,085 for the Sunshine Kids Foundation
What happens when you put 40+ mahjong players together for five weeks of tiles, competition, laughter and a little friendly chaos?
You raise $2,085 for the Sunshine Kids Foundation. āļøš
Our recent Sunshine Mahj league was created around something pretty simple: bring people together to play a game we love, make it fun, and find a way to do some good while we're at it.
Thanks to the generosity of our players, sponsors and prize donors, we were able to donate $2,085 to the Sunshine Kids Foundation, an organization that provides positive group activities and emotional support for children with cancer.
And while the fundraising was the most important number on our final scoreboard, there were plenty of other numbers worth celebrating.
And the Winners Are...
š Mary Katherine Henderson finished the league in the top spot and took home a beautiful mahjong set donated by Melissa Miller with Verity Mortgage.
š Kacey Ziegler won a Case-Mate Mahjong Set donated by Amy Glover Bryant with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Arkansas Realty.
š Amy Hair won the raffle for a set of mahjong tiles generously donated by an anonymous donor.
⨠Leslie Humiston won the raffle for the mahjong mat donated by Tracee Gentry Matthews.
š„ And on our fifth and final night, Sharon Lamb posted the highest score of the evening and won a pool-table mahjong mat donated by another generous anonymous donor.
But the best result of the league wasn't sitting on the prize table.
It was $2,085 headed to the Sunshine Kids Foundation.
More Than Mahjong
One of the things I've loved most about creating Sunshine Mahj is watching what happens around the table.
Yes, we're playing mahjong. We're watching the Charleston, chasing jokers, questioning why on earth someone passed that tile, and trying to figure out how the person across the table is already calling mahjong.
But we're also meeting people we might not otherwise have met. We're building friendships. We're laughing. We're cheering each other on. And this time, we turned all of that energy into something that will benefit children and families who deserve a little extra sunshine.
That makes every hand we played feel a little more meaningful.
To everyone who played, donated, sponsored, bought a raffle ticket, helped behind the scenes or simply showed up ready to have a good time: thank you.
You helped turn a mahjong league into a community, and that community raised $2,085 for the Sunshine Kids Foundation.
I'd call that a winning hand. āļø
